MOTIVATING TEENAGERS TO STUDY

The modern world is very competitive. There is an increasing pressure on all to perform to their best. Today there are reports that the children are often pressurized by the parents and teachers to work harder and better than ever before. This creates an emotional and mental pressure which is not at all desirable. The problem is more acute with the teenagers since they are passing through the transitionary phase of their life. Hence it is important for both parents and teachers to motivate these teenagers to study on a regular basis so that they develop an interest in it.

It is always better that the children get some internal insight into study rather than the external pressure by parents and teachers which may be counterproductive. There are few simple things that can be done for it. The teenagers should be taught the importance of the time management and made to understand through examples how it is not possible to get the time spent already. They should be advised to make calendars of their activities and ensure that they adhere to it .This would also ensure that there is no backlog and no tension of pending work. The teenagers should always be given a conducive environment to study. There should be minimum distraction at the time of studies. The parents should ensure that the guests, television do not disturb the students and they are able to concentrate. The teenagers should be provided with a proper study table and sufficient space to keep their study materials also.

Motivating the teenagers to study is a time bound and long term process. The parents should avoid any pressure and let the child develop his own interests .He should be free to pursue the subjects in which he has interests. The parents and teachers should give him an opportunity to learn from the mistakes and to internalize some truths about life. He would be more responsible and would value things more seriously thereafter. Any good work should be praised and they should be constantly reminded that they have high potentials. This is essential to prevent any lack of confidence and the sense of depression among them.

The teenagers are the citizens of tomorrow. The parents should try and motivate them in true spirit and be a friend and a guide with them. This would ensure that they grow into responsible and proud citizens of the country.

I need career advice, thinking about a career in the FBI as a criminal profiler?

Question by lionheart: I need career advice, thinking about a career in the FBI as a criminal profiler?
I’m still not sure yet but i think I want to become a supervisory special agent with the NCAVC or a criminal profiler as its more commonly known. Of course I realize that I will spend many years as an FBI special agent first and even then getting into the NCAVC and even then its not guaranteed. I’m only a freshman in high-school but I want to start planning on a career as soon as possible. Right now I’m just looking for any kind of advice such as useful courses to take in college, working conditions of an FBI special agent and/or criminal profiler or alternate careers in the FBI.
I’m generally an intelligent person and I’m good at figuring things out and reasoning- I’m a logical thinker. I just want a career where i can use my skills and also make the world a better place in some way. If you know of any other careers (in or outside criminal justice) that sound like what I’m looking for that would also be a big help.

Thank you for all your help.

Getting in to the FBI is very difficult. Getting in to the elite NCAVC is even more challenging. I use to be interested in working for the FBI until I learned that you have no choice on where you will be stationed. Needless to say, I’ve researched what it takes to get in to the FBI. I also chose a course of study in college that will help to get in to the criminal justice system.
Working towards joining the FBI starts in high school. You have to consistently work hard to get good grades and boost your resume with community service and extra-curricular activities. When it comes to choosing a major in college there are several that the FBI recommends. Most people believe that Criminal Justice would be the obvious choice, but in actuality, that is not one of the recommended majors. The FBI’s website list four majors that they are interested in. These include Accounting, Law, Language, and Computer Science. I recommend that you try to double major in college choosing one of the above mentioned majors and also psychology (to help with the NCAVC). While your in college you should definetly apply for an honors internship with the FBI. You must have at least a 3.0. Additionally, it is important that you maintain a high GPA your entire college career.

After college you could try and apply to the FBI right away. You may also choose to further your education and increase your chances of being hired by obtaining your masters, law degree, or doctorate.

Another job that might interest you is becoming an intelligence analyst for anyone of the federal agencies (military, CIA, FBI, DEA, etc.).

How is career planning situation in middle and high school in US?

Question by carol: How is career planning situation in middle and high school in US?
I am from China. Now I am working to find out the advantages of adolescent career planning in the middle and high school in the U.S. I think this will benefit the development of Chinese students. Now I need some advice!
(1) Does the government play a positive role in adolescent career planning? Is there any website describing the detailed information?
(2) Does every middle school or high school have vocational counselors? If students go to ask for advice, what will the counselors do? Will they give personality assessment for the students?
(3) Will the students and parents go to specialized institutions for further advices?

Because our country basically turns education over to individual states there is not federal program for career planning in middle and high schools. Having said that there is a wonderful initiative called Making Middle Grades Work/High Schools That Work in which a key practice is Guidance.

In guidance teachers work with students during what is called Advisor/Advisee in which students do career research and other activities to help the student decide what a good choice for him/her as a vocation may be.

Once a student has an idea of what he/she may be interested, the school sets up a system called Acadamies. In acadamies there are courses of study and the suggested classes that a student should take. For example, if a student knows he or she is interested in the medical field, then they should take the classes suggested for those going into a medical field.

Many states, Ohio being one, have made this inititive a priority, therfore the state offers grant money to schools who implement the program.

As for parent involvement, under Advisor/Advisee, parents are to come to the school and talk with thier child’s advisor, along with their child, and then the parent’s signature is required for the student to register for classes.

Having been a part of HSTW in the past, I have knowledge of it, but you may get more information by visiting the following web site: http://www.hstw.org/index.html. However, let me just say that HSTW does not require that any school do all of the key practices, nor do they tell a school how to implement the key practices. Each school can taylor them to fit the school. Although, at workshops they give many examples of how other schools implement the different key practices.

I’m seventeen and I want to research different career paths I could take. My dream career is to be an english teacher somwhere in Europe, like teaching it as a second language. Does anyone have any advice or know of any websites that I could visit?

There are two sites I recommend:

www.eslcafe.com This site has a lot of information about teaching English overseas. In the jobs section, you can see where in the world the jobs are and you can read forums about teachers’ experiences there.

www.tesol.org This site is for serious ESL teachers (TESOL=Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and has a lot of good information about the profession.
